TAUPO-TOTARA PETITION.

THE COMMITTEE'S REPORT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The report of the committee on the Taupo-Totara Company's petition was presented to the House this afternoon. The findings of the committee were as follows: —(a) The committee does not recommend the Government to purchase the railway in the manner and on the terms suggested by the Company; (b) It does not recommend the Government to grant the prayer of the petitioners to be allowed to purchase 200,000 acres of native land; (c) It is of opinion that it is desirable that induce-! incuts be offered to settlers to occupy land in the vicinity of the tram line anil of Lake Taupo, and to this end facilities for economical transit of manures and produce are necessary; (d) The committee recommends that an Order-in-Council be granted to the Company to f extend their line to Taupo, and that the Government guarantee the cost not exceeding £50,000, on adequate security, and on conditions securing: (I) That the construction of the permanent way is carried out to the satisfaction of 'the Government; (2) That uniform freight) and passenger rates over the completed! system from Putaruru to Taupo are con-1 trolled in the public interest; and (,1) | That the Government have the right at' any time to purchase the line and plant J in working order at a price not to exceed the actual cost of construction, uicu ( price to include goodwill. i.
