HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. Yesterday's meeting of the High School Board was attended by the Chairman (Mr. E. Dockrill), and Messrs. S. Percy-Smith, 11. Eyre-Kenny, D. Hwfcaken, M. Eraser, G. Grey, and Dr. Eookes. Five tenants of various properties of the High School, Commissioners petitioned the Board to make a substantial grant for the improvement of the Owihanga Road. The properties had, ran 'the petition, been in the occupation of tenants for some 20 years, And owing to the fact that the Clifton County Council had such a very long stretch of expensive main road to maintain it was not possible for it. to expend the necessary amounts on side roads to keep them in order. Tenants of the Board on the Owhanga Road had at various times paid out of their own pockets for improvements necessary to allow of them using it, close on £IOO, in addition to paying the County rates. Traffic on the road was naturally increasing and owing to its bad state the cost of cartage was very heavy, and the petitioners trusted that the Board would see its way clear to exercise the provisions contained in section 2 of the Education Reserves Act, 1005, which allowed the School Commissioners to expend money in the direction asked for.—Members generally were of the opinion that the Board had no power to expend its funds in the manner suggested. The section of the Act quoted only applied, it was pointed out, to School Commissioners, not to Higlr school Boards. Finally it was decided to obtain the opinion of the Board's.solicitor on the matter.

Last month it cost £57 to run , the 1 boarding-house establishment atj the j High School. In reporting this fact the principal (Mr. W. H. Moves) men'tioned' that as the revenue was now 0E203 per term, the past month showed ]4 ; slight profit. "'._ •' ' '? ■-.
