DISTRICT NEWS.

MAKETAWA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Co-operation amongst farmers in different parts of the world takes different phases, but the history, of the movement shows that invariably those initiating the system have to combat a lot of prejudice before it can be placed on a firm footing. It \vas the case when co-opera-tive factories were mooted in Taranaki 18 or 20 years ago, and there is not the slightest doubt but that the idea of trying to "do" one's neighbor instead of : otherwise is one of the main causes that prevent the extension of co-operation as it should be.. The fact that there are j amongst the suppliers to the local factory some who would let another man pay for the "News" rather than subscribe themselves yet take fine care to rush the paper, is simply an evidence of the spirit that is the-cause of stagnation in the. co-operative movement. It's rather annoying when one finds his paper has been "pinched" by a fellow-supplier, and no other construction can be put on such action than that as I have mentioned. If the "News" is highly appreciated there is no need to "crib" a copy. The sub. is not out of the way, and if those who have allowed themselves to attain such a bad habit will only mention that they are too pom' to pay for the. sheet 1 have no doubt 'arrangements can be made whereby they can get the paper. At time of writing and for a few days previous we have had ideal spring weather, and in consequence grass is coming along tip-top. Cows are looking better, and the milk yield is gradually increasing. • If present conditions continue the drawback of the wet and unsatisfactory early part of the season will be counterbalanced; still, many have given vent to the opinion that it's "not worth the candle" to have cows in too early, rficognising that it is better to provide green fodder for- autumn. With the well-known variation of Taranaki climate, what will suit one part is a hindrance to another, and only experience will show what is best. A regular rush is on at present preparing ground and getting oats in. I hear that the ratepayers in Inglewood will, in a short while, have the opportunity of again considering the question of erecting a municipal operahouse. We-who are practically in the suburbs of the borough are interested in tile movement, and desire to see Inglej wood go ahead, and the erection of an up-to-date municipal building must add to the.tone or status of the place, and it i,s hoped that the- proposal will not be turned doton this time, for I feel sure that with judicious management it should prove a payable proposition, besides being of great utility to the district.

Students of political economy are likely to have a treat some time this month, as >!' understand that there is a probability of Mr. McHugh, lecturer on political economy, from the Old Country, who is on a visit to the Dominion, delivering an address in Inglewood towards the end of the month. I believe Mr. Arthur Withy, who h:-.s lectured in different, parts' of the Dominion on behalf of the Land Values' League, will also speak, so the meeting should prove interesting. I presume advertisement will show later oii the dates fixed.
