LAND BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The Taranaki Land Board met yesterday, when there were present: The Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr. G. H. Bullard) and Messrs Heslop, Rattenbury and MeChmgnsre. 'Mr. Ryan was granted leave of absence.

[ APPLICATIONS FOR LAND. Applications for land were approved as follows: Charles Stafford, sections 49 and 51, Spotswood, 4 acres 3 roods 17 perches. —Subject to satisfactory examination by the Commissioner. J. Egarr, section 56, Spotswood, 4 acres 2 roods 39 perches.—Subject to satisfactory examination by the Commissioner. G. R. .Mossman, section 20, block 15, Aria, adjoining his present holding, to enable liira to get access to his new homestead—At £3 10s per acre, on renewable lease. The application of the Mangaroa School Committee for an area for school purposes, and the application for section 12, block 3, Ohura, a site for a showground, were both postponed.

IMPROVED FARMS. Leases were granted to the following improved farm settlers: —J. Moore, section 20, block 11, Mapara; L. J. Bacon, section 8, block 2, Tangitu; J. W. Orr, section 3, block 7, Mapara. DEFAULTING SELECTORS. Ranger Twiss reported on 16 sections, showing only three defaulted, and Ranger Tolme on 13 sections, showing only one defaulter. It was reported that the selector on section 8, block 5, Aria, was not fulfilling his residence conditions. —It was decided j to inform the Advances to Settlers Ofifice of his default, and to notify the selector that? action would be taken to forfeit his holding.

TRANSFERS. Transfers were approved as follows: Charles Joyce to S. H. J. Brown, part of section 10, block 9, Ohura; Wm. Schneider to Lawrence Smith, part section 6, block 2, Mahoe; John Wright to Frank Hagensen, section 6, block 11, Waro; J. L. Guilford's attorney to Mrs, Guilford, section 22, block 1, Tangitu (subject to everything being found to be in order); John Fergusson to Walter, and Lucy Fry, section 8, block 12, Aria; R. Mounsey to Mrs. Alice James, section 27, block 15, Ngatimaru; John Muir to John Muir, junr., sections 5, 46, 48, 50, block 1, Mahoe; E. J. Meads to G. H. Milne ' and Miss J. Kenman, section 3, block 8, Ohura, 1000 acres (subject to Miss Kenman being eligible); E. C. Kent to E. and H. Learv, section 5, block 10, Waro; H. C. S. Hughes to John Cheswass, sections 11 and 17, block 6, Kapara; S. Hanna to L. C. Pinny, sections 7, 31 and 36, block 15, Ngatimaru, 338 acres (subject to a satisfactory explanation regarding other land held by Pinny); Mary Ballot to W. Sadler, sections 544 and 571, New Plymouth; M. Kelly to Peter Moratti, sections 2 and 29, block 15, Ngatimaru (subject to all necessary documents being in order). E. R. Wilson's application to take T. H. S. Wilson as a partner in section 8, block 2, Mahoe, was approved. The application of Walter Beard to transfer section 1, block 16, Ohura, to James Malone, which was refused at the July meeting, was again before, the Board, and was finally approved, transferee to be warned that the residence conditions will be strictly enforced at the end of twelve months.

J. Jacobson, whose application to transfer sections 8, 9, 3 and 4, block 4, Omona, was refused in June last, applied to transfer to Mrs. C. M. Collycr. The total area of the section is 800 acres. Mrs. Collver's husband, it was reported, already liolds 18110 acres—Mr. Jacobson appeared and maije a statement that the land was too much for his capital, and that the facilities for schooling were not good. Mr. Collycr also attended and stated that lie wanted the land .to work, as his present holding was inconvenient. —The Board, Mr. MeCluggage dissenting, resolved to refuse to consent to the transfer.

SUB-LEASES. The following sub-leases were approved:—E. Owens to James Rodgers, section 10, block 12, Aria; James Rodgers to M. and V. Rodgers, section 12, block 13, Ohura; D. 11. Proffitt to D. 11. Proffitt, junr., section 1, block 6, Mahoe; John Slieeliy to A. M. Bower, sections 18 and 20, block I), Mimi • Were and Were to W. 11. Rossiter, part of section 545, Patea district, comprising 10 acres odd, for seven years at £OO per annum.

C. M. I-lawken's- application to sublease sections 3, 5 and 10, block 14, Waro, of a total area of 1391 acres, to R. and A. McMullan, who already hold 400 acres under a lease-in-perpetuity, was refused on account of aggregation. It was resolved to amend the. previous resolution, and grant a temporary occupation to J. l'atillo and J. A. Taylor (with a view to including it in their licenses when issued) of section 15, block' 12, Mapara.

GENERAL. It was decided to accept the explanation of Mrs. P. M. B1 easel, who selected section 1, block 0, Tangitu, and within a few days applied to transfer to lier husband and his mate. The recommendation of the ranger was accepted that section 5, block 13, Ohura, containing 83% acres, known as the Tatu village reserve, should be felled and grassed with a view to offering it for lease. An application was considered for the lease of a small island in the Waitara river, and it was resolved to recommend that 'it be set aside as a quarry reserve, and that the disposal of the land-be left ill the Commissioner's hands.

The application of the Waitoma County Council for a certificate of hypothecation of "thirds" for the Aria loan was approved up to the amounts of the special rates. - . _ Application was made by the High School Board of New Plymouth for the conversion ■ of section K, of an area of 3 acres 2 roods 20 perches, from "a primary school to a secondary school reserve, for a site for the Girls' High SchoolRecommended for approval. It was decided to take no action with regard to .the letter received from the Taranaki County Council to the. effect that it was still averse to the disposal of part of the Omata road, closed, in part N.R. 1, Grey district. A recommendation was passed that the unsold sections in Spotswood be withdrawn from sale, with a view to consideration of a re-valuation.

It was resolved to give a year-to-year lease of section 20,. block 14, Oluira, to Oliver Old, subject to provision being made against the landing-place -being blocked. *
