EFFECTS OF DROUGHT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Monday. In order to ascertain the extent to which the reported -drought in the Philippines would probably influence the hemp market, that is whether the current values were likely to be maintained, tie Secretary of Agriculture, Industries and Commerce 'cabled to the British Consul at Manila to the following effect: "The sharp rise in prices Qf hemp in London is said to be due to' the decreased output at the Philippines. Kindly cable causes and whether likely to continue." To this the following reply has been received:- "No shortage of arrivals of hemp here at present, but an eventual decrease of possibly 100,000 bales this year, owing to the'drought in the past spring, is anticipated, provided the present demand continues."
