WELLINGTON (30) v. SOUTHLAND (6). By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The representative Rugby football match between Wellington and Southland was played this afternoon, and resulted in a victory for the home team by 30 points to G. Wellington got into Southland's territory immediately after the kick-ofl, but the Southland pack took the ball down the field at their feet, and J.. Ryan, waiting for the bounce, missed altogether. Wellington's line was in danger, but E. Ryan kicked into safety. Southland kept up the pressure, and the home team were forced. A mark by Edgenton gave McNeece' a chance to show his place-kicking ability', and he landed a great goal from the centre line. Wellington's back machinery was several times set in motion bv Roberts, but faulty passing nullified their efforts. The opposing packs congested every inch of ground, and Southland worked down near Wellington's line, where Henderson increased their score by kicking a penalty goal. Later on Grace got the ball and passed to Young, who raced over noar the corner. Macfarlane's kick missed. Southland 6, Wellington 3. On •resuming McLeod played full back, Ryan going up to the centre and Grace returning to the wing. A passing rush bore fruit 1 , Ramsden crossing the line. No goal resulted. This reverse had the effeet of livening up the Southlands, and they attacked with renewed vigour. Wellington obtained the ball in their own 25, and the best passing of the day ended by Grace getting possession and racing over behind the posts. Macfarlane converted. The Wellington backs were now showing capital form, and were verysoon over the line again, Ryan touching down between the posts after a clever dodgy run, during which he beat four or five men. Macfarlane converted. Southland's defence had by this time £&ded away, and Hill was the next to score for Wellington. Macfarlane missed with the kick. Once more the' Wellington rearguard got going, and Ryan obtaining the ball from a pass by McLeod scored near the corner flaw. No goal resulted. Grace was the next to score, and H. Paton's kick was Dot successful. The last try went to the credit of Ryan, from an attack started by Grace. The ball was handled by McLeod and! then came to Ryan, who crossed near the corner. Macfarlane converted with a splendid kick, and the final scores were: Wellington 30, Southland 6.

THE LEAGUE GAME. AUSTRALIAN LEAGUE TEAM. Sydney, August 14. Gleeson replaces O'Mallev in the League team. WELLINGTON 24 v. ROTORUA 10.

Rotorua, Last Night. In the League game between Wellington and Rotorua. Wellington opened with fast play, and Wilson was the first to score. King next crossed the line, and Cook then scored and kicked a goal. Kelly made the next try, and Cook converted. Woodward, for Rotorua, placed a goal. Reke was responsible for a try by Woodward, and the first spell ended: Rotorua 7. Wellington Ifi. In the second spell Rotorua only scored one try. while Wellington registered another eight: .points, liiml score: Wellington 24, Rotorua 10.

[ NORTH v. SOUTH TARANAKI. The public are reminded of the match to-day on the Recreation Sports Ground between North and South Taranaki. A fast and interesting game should be played, as each team includes some players who have made a name playing both codes of Rugby. A special train will leave Ilawera at 11.30 a.m., and the 4.20 p.m. train is delayed to leave New Plymouth at .1.30. Holiday excursion fares are granted and country patrons will be able to see the modern game of Rugby. The New South Wales v. Taranaki match is. creating a lot of interest, mid the New Zealand League is negotiating to get Messenger, the famous threequarter, to visit New Zealand and play in the first four matches. If successful, Taranaki people will have an opportunity of seeing this marvellous player.
