Dr. Claridge and Mr. and Mrs. W. Hirst left for the north by the Rarawa last night.

We have been informed that the Rev. J> Laird, late of New Plymouth, has accepted a call to the Spr-eydon Baptist Church (Christchurch).

Mr. W. B. Gougb, Petone borough inspector, has been appointed to a similar position at Hawera. Mr. Gough, wh« has been in the Petone borough for fourteen years, was chosen from fifty-two applicants.

Previous to retiring from office the Hon. G. W. Russell appointed Dr. L. Gi Calkwell, of Bemuera, Auckland, as medical inspector of schools, thus completing, the four appointments agreed to by the late Cabinet.

Samuel Alfred Bristol, a widely-known and popular old identity, died at' Timaru yesterday, in his eightieth year. He was a native of Wiltshire, and came to> South Canterbury in 18(53 as farm manager of the large Kingsdown estate, just south of Timaru, and had charge till the estate was sub-divided. He was enthusiastic in all kinds of out-door .sports—racing, hunting, cricket, golf, bowling and athletics. He was president of such clubs till recently, I Dr. James Hudson, of Tapawera, who .was killed in a motor-ear accident on Monday, was formerly district healthofficer for Nelson and Marlborough. He married a daughter of the late Rev. J. C. Andrew, of Masterton. The decease* was a brother of Mr. W. B. Hudson, of the New Zealand Government Life Insurance Department. Mr. Q. V. Hudson, of the New Zealand Post and Telegraph Department, and Miss Hudson, of Wellington. The late Mr. Charles Hudson at one. time assistant general manager of railways in New Zealand, was also a brother.
