AUSTRALIA v. LANCASHIRE. liy Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Loudon, July 4. For the match with Australia Lancashire omitted Fairdough. The day was warm and there were 4000 spectators. The wicket was soft and difficult. Hornby won the toss and sent the Australians to the wickets. Kelleway and Jennings opened to Dean and Huddleston and made an unfortunate start. Ketleway gave a chance in the slips after making two, and it was accepted. Jennings and Macartney raised the total to 42, when Macartney was bowled while playing back. He did not play with his usual certainty. Jennings was in for 105 minutes. The bright spot in the innings was the partnership of Bardsley and Gregory, which added 79 for the fourth wicket. Bardsley was often beaten and gave a chance at 19, but he made a few good pulls. Gregory was in for 100 minutes and hit all round the wicket, making six fours. He gave three chances. The remainder of the team found the bowling rather too good. The 50 took 50 minutes, the century 95 minutes, and the innings 170 minutes. When Lancashire went to the wickets Makepeace and Spooner faced Whitty and Kelleway. Makepeace, before he had scored, was taken by a good catch at mid-off. Spooner, who did, some good driving, was taken from a lofty hit at long-on. The catch was well judged. He was in [or 00 minutes. Sharp hit a four off the last ball of the day. He scored 50 in 100 minutes. He gave a chance at 30. Fifty was hoisted in 40 minutes, and the century in 105 minutes. The following are the scores:— AUSTRALTA.-First Innings.
