The first day of the Gisborne Racing Club's winter steeplechase meeting passed off to-day in ideal weather, and in the presence of a record crowd. There . passed through the totalisator the sum of £9038, as against £7934 for the initial day of last year. The following are the details of the racing:— Handicap Hurdle Race, of 100 sovs; one mile and three-quarters. —1 Master Theory, 9.1, 1; 2 Paisano, 11.13, 2; 4 Game," 9.11, 3. 3 Dogger Bank 10.2. and 5 Baldas 9.2 also started. Won by three lengths, with Game two and a half lengths away.' Time, 3mm 20sec. A protest against Master Theory for running off at the first hurdle was dismissed. The winner led all the way, and won by half a length, with a full length between second and third. Time, lmin 7 l-ssee. Gisborne "Park Steeplechase Handicap, of 200 sovs; about" three miles.— 1 Armagh, 10.6. 1; 3' Bonnie Jean, 9.9, 2; 6 Monarch, 9.7, 3. 2 Tui Cnkobau 10.12, 5 Te Raui 10.9, and 4 Quandary 9.7 also started. Bonnie Jean led for most of the way, but tired at the bottom hurdle, and Armagh won in a canter, with the third horse close up. Time, flmin 27sec.

The finish was close, Sylverlyte passing the post half a length behiud the winner, Compliment heing near at hand. Time, Imin 33sec. Tramway Steeplechase Handicap, of 100 sovs; two miles.—2 Taiaha, 10.7, 1; '4 Te Rahui, 9.9, 2. I Captain Jingle 10.0 and 3 Swarthmoor 10.8 also started, but both baulked at the hurdles and withdrew. Te Rahui ran round the second last hurdle and Taiftha romped home. - Te Rahui then registered an easy second. Time, 4min 17% sec.
