THE CANADTAN-NEW ZEALAND SERVICE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In the House this afternoon, speaking to a question by Mr. Okcy in regard to the Canadian New Zealand service, the Prime Minister said that he did not think it would he wise to lay the full agreement between the Union Company and the Government on the table of the House. Complaint was made by several members that space had been refused to New Zealand shippers while freightage had been given to Australia, who paid no subsidy. Sir J. Ward said that if vessels were to trade to New Zealand only the subsidy would he more like £IOO,OOO than £20,000, the amount nowpaid, and New Zealand could not afford to pay such a sum. The Prime Minister said that at first merchants took little or no interest in the service, but now a considerable trade had been built up. They wanted all the advantages. It was decided that the agreement should be kid before the House, the Prime Minister finally offering no objections. "If they want it they can have it," he said. The Government, savs the Dominion, apparently have been' caught napping over the Chairmanship of Committees. They have negleeted to give notice to move for the appointment of a chairman for the session, and as to-morrow the no-confidence debate will come- on. and take precedence of other business, the appointment must be left over in the meantime. If Mr. Massey wins in the division the Chairmanship of Committees will therefore be the gift of his party. Mr. E. Newman is to ask the Hon. Mr. Myers to-day whether the Government intends to make more generous provision for pensions for Maori War veterans.
