HOUSEHOLDERS' MEETINGS

TIMARU. By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, Tuesday. A rumour that tlie secularists intended to try to capture a Timaru school committee, because the outgoing committee had permitted ministers to give scripture lessons, caused an unusually large number of householders to attend the annual meeting. The opponents of scripture were smothered when opposing a vote of thanks propo.-ed to the ministers. THE BIBLE IN SCHOOLS. Dunedin, Tuesday. In tlie course of a few remarks at the householders' meeting in the George street school last night the Rev. G. Knowles Smith said he noticed a report in the press that the president of the Primtive Methodist Conference was associated with the Primate and others as vice-president in a movement to introduce the New South Wales system of Bible in schools into New Zealand. He wished to say that the use of his name, as president 'of the Primitive Methodist Conference, was entirely without his authority. lie had never been consulted in the matter, and, moreover, when the attempt was made they would find him on the platform very much against it. TONGAPORUTU. There was a fair attendance at the Tongaporutu annual meeting of householders. The report stated that the year liad been a satisfactory one. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £(> 14s fld. The following committee was appointed:—Messrs .T. .T. Chapman. R. O'Donnell. R. Scott, T. Waters and A. .Thompson. At a subsequent meeting Mr. J. .T. Chapman was chosen chairman. The question of firing for warming the school during the winter months was discussed, and it was resolved to secure from the Education Board one of the radiators for heating purposes, the same to be installed immediately, to be in readiness for the cold weather. The following gentlemen were elected on the committee:—Messrs E. Raylev, Bovett. E. George. 11. Kendall. Matthews, E. V. Meredith and Ramsbottom. Mr. E. C. Meredith'was voted to the chair at the general meeting and at a subsequrnt meeting of the School Committee was unanimously elected as chairman for the ensuing year. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Meyenberg for the assistance given the committee during the past year, to Mr. E. C. 'Meredith for the manner in which he luul conducted the business of the committee, and to the committee as a whole for thp interest they had taken in their work and their regular attendance at the meetings—Own correspondent. TIKORANGI. At the meeting of householders on Monday night the following were elected as a committee:—Messrs R. P. Lye, J. Hine, junr.;, C. Foreman, J. P. Smart, H. Foreman, W. 'Kilpatrick and L. Faull. The committee met immediately after and Mi'. R. F, Lye was unanimously elected chairman. The new committee take over a credit balance of over £4O, and the laLc. commissioners (Messrs Lye and Hine) were congratulated on their careful administration during the past few years. It was decided to request the Board to provide a class room, so that children's studies could he carried on under more favorable conditions than at present—Own correspondent. LINCOLN. The following committee were elected: —Mrs, G. G. Glassford, Mrs. G. Henwood, Messrs R. D. Barford (chairman), 0. M. Boldt (secretary and treasurer), W. Wilson, E. R. Metcalf, R. Swanston.— Own correspondent. NORFOLK. Mr. IT. Trimble presided over an attendance of eight householders. The balance-sheet showed a credit 'of £2l, which was considered highly satisfactory. Messrs. R. Stevens, A. Marshall, J. W. 1 Burgess, A. Corney, T. H. Jones, A. I Johnstone and W. Jellyman were elected unopposed to the committee. The chairman urged on the householders to endeavor to have primary schools placed on the same, plane as distill Jiigll schools with reference to subsidy. Votes of thanks were accorded the outgoing committee, the staff, and the chairman. At a subsequent meeting Mr. R, Stevens was elected chairman and Mr. J. W. Burgess secretary. TARIKI. Ten householders were present. Messrs. J. Therklesen, Coutts and Blanchard were nominated to the committee. Others present refused nomination. Another was desired. i EGMONT VILLAGE. Messrs. S. TOKO. At the annual meeting of householders twelve turned up, ten being nominated candidates for the new committee. The poll resulted in the return of new blood, the members elected to the committee being as follows: —Messrs. G. Bain, T. A. Lees, C. Griffon, <3. E. Bocock, M. Gernhoefer, J, Kilpatrick, and W. Pratt. At a subsequent meeting of the newlyelected committee Mr. G. Bain was elected chairman for the ansuing year. lIUIRANGI. Eight householders attended, Mr. J. H. Smith presiding. A resolution was passed recommending that the affairs of the school be attended to by commissioners as at present, but that the name of T. Y. Andrews he suggested in lieu of Mr. Loveridge, who wished to retire. OKATO. Only four householders attended, consequently no committee was appointed: 'The meeting recommended that Messrs. A. ,T. Richards and J. Wooldridge should he appointed commissioners. PEMBROKE. Only two householders attended and the meeting lapsed. i TUNA. | At the householders' meeting seven persons only attended, and the following school committee was elected:—Messrs. j W. Hathaway, Clias. Latham, Thomas Vickers, Robert Milne, Fred Wellington, W. Skedwell, sen., and W. Skedwell, jurn) Mr. TTathaway was again unanimously returned as chairman and Mr. Latham secretary. It was decided to request tlie parents of the children in the district to do their best to send their children very regularly to school, so that the, school staff may not he reduced at the end of the present year. The inspector's report on the school was read, after which it was decided to congratulate the teachers on the good results obtained. URENUI. Mr. Halcombe (chairman) presided over a small attendance. The following were elected a committee:—Messrs. Halcombe, Pigott, McLennan, Tavlor. J. Smith, W. McKenzie, and S. Weston. Mr. Halcombe was again elected chairman. OAONUI. The meeting did not eventuate. TARURUTAN GI. Mr. ,T. Martin presided over a very fair muster of householders. The balancesheet showed a credit balance of £ll 3d. There was considerable interest taken in the election of the Committee, the voting being as follows:—E. Marsh 17, T. L. Bishop 15. G. M. Longstaff 12. R. Street 11, G. Giddy 10. J. F. Giddv 10, A. Street 10, .J. Martin 8, and E. Dixon 8. The seven first-named were declared elected. At a subsequent meetinn; Mr. F. L. Bishop was elected chairman and Mr. R. Street secretary.
