But the man most rapidly coming to the front in Mexico is General lit rnardo Reyes. Reyes is a popular idol in Mexico. For ten years he was Minister of War under President Diaz. That despot liecame apprehensive of the grow- j ing popularity of his Minister, and two year- before his own downfall despatched Reyes to Europe on a mission whii-h kept him out of Mexico until the revolution. Reyes came back at the time the •alien Diaz wa- leaving, and they passed one another on the Atlantic Ocean. Before leaving Europe General Reyes stated that he was returning to a->i-t in putting down the revolution, but on his arrival he found the Maderi-tos in victorious control, and thereafter found occasion to moderate bis langua"v. He gave in his adhesion to the revolutionary leader, and promised that he would become Mini-ter of War in M.ub ro's Cabinet.
