SAUNDERS' PICTURES. ' A FOE TO RICHELIEU. Throughout the history of the world there have risen up at intervals the figures of great men who have dominated their ages witli a power almost supernatural. Such a type was Richelieu, Prince of the Church, and lord of the State The present picture by Pathe's is a vivid portrayal of this great man and the age he lived in. The first seen* of this brilliantly colored historical play takes place at the Court of Franc* in the 17th Century, when Cardiiul Richelieu was in full power. His nephew, the Count de Chateauneuf, is head over ears in love with the Duchess of Chevrenuse, the Queen's closest confident, and the love is reciprocated. In spite of the Cardinal's edict against duelling, Count crosses swords with De Louvigny for the lady's .favors, and it is Chateauneuf who falls. He is harbored and saved from death by the Duchess, but thev are betrayed by De Louvigny. Jlm.e de Chevrcnnse has the Queen's ear, and through her Royal mistress she begs the King 'for grace. Louis XIII. grants it, and the powerful Cardinal is checkmated. The Queen, in her famous intrigue with kthe Duke of Buckingham, enlists Chateauneuf's services as messenger. Another betrayal results in Chateuneuf 'being arrested, but sooner than divulge the Queen's secret he suffers terrible torture and <leath. The Duchess then jswears vengeance against the Cardinal ;and uses the Count de Calais as her' champion. He in his turn goes bravely .to death, and again through the treachery of De Louvigny. The picture, which is historically correct in every detail, ends with the Duchess plunging n dagger into the informer's heart. This fine pro- 1 duction will be on view for three nights.
