A London cablegram report® that King Alfonso has arrived'at Cowes. The death lias Wurrcd in London of Admiral Sir James Elphinstone Erskinc. Inspector Wilson, in charge of the Wanganui police district, paid an official visit to New Plymouth and Waitara yesterday. , The Mayor. Mr. G. Tisch, passed a fairly good day yesterday. The operation is to be performed at the hospital this morning.
Mr. Robert McMullia.ii has .been appointed representative in the Te Wera district for the N T ,Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., Stratford.
The Nelson City Council last night appointed Mr. W. J. ITookey, at present manager of the Waihi gas works, to the position of manager and engineer of the Nelson City gas works. There ware twenty-*ix applicants A Press Association message from Christeliurch announces the death yesterday of the Rev. James Maxwell, Presbyterian minister of that city and late of Waddington. He was 09 years of age, and leaves a widow, one son and five daughters.
A London cablegram reports the death of Sir William Tyrone Power, K.C.8., who nits Oommissary-Gcneral-iu-Cliief of the British Army. Sir William, who was horn in 1819, was employed in the commissariat department in the Xew Zealand campaign in the forties. Mr. H. N. Holmes, who has been gen* eral secretary of the Wellington Y.M.C.A. for seven and a half years, and national secretary for the Y.M.C.A. in New Zca-; land, has tendered liis resignation to the Board of Directors of the institution. He leaves Wellington in October, and after spending two months in Australia (his home being in Adelaide), intends proceeding to Canada and the United States, where he will take up certain .studies for a time.—Press Association.
