MEETING THE FARMERS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Wednesday. The Commandant of the Forces, Major-General Godley, by request, attended the Farmers' Union Conference to-day to answer any questions in regard to the new defence scheme. The Genera] said that the authorities had already practically settled the training of mounted men in country districts. It had been arranged that the training of the mounted section should be late in the year —May, or even as late ae June, in regard to the thirty drills to be done during the year, miiny fanners had suggested that the drills should be lumped. The training, to be of t'he greatest v;>lue, should be progressive throughout the year, and he hoped the farmers would meet them half-way. The authorities would meet the farmers more than half-way.

Several delegates suggested that tlie month of May would not suit Canterbury, and General Godley said he would be prepared to have October for Canterbury. The infantry camps would unqestionably .be in summer
