MR T. E. TAYLOR
HIS CONDITION EXTREMELY GRAVE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Ohristchurch, Last Night. Yesterday's reports concerning the condition of the Mayor (Mr. T. E. Taytor, M.P.) gave some reasons for hops that he was on the road to recovery, Jnt to-day's official bulletins are very pessimistic. It wag reported this morning that Mr. Taylor had had a bad nigh* and his friends were taking a very. gloomy view of the prospects. At midday the medical attendants issued the following brief and discouraging report, "Improvement not maintained, condition grave." It is understood that a further operation was decided upon early t&is afternoon, but shortly after two o'docjt it was officially amwanced that tJ» •condition of the patient was diitinc% worse and that the doctors could bold out no hope of recovery. The Mayor sent for the" town clarfc thk morning and requested him to moire an announcement on his behalf on the following lines: "That in view of >» severe illness and unlikelihood in even* of his early recovery of his being abl» to devote the degree of physical energy necessary to deal with the difficulties of the question of supplies of nmteriale fot carrying out the proposed road surface scheme, he desired to suggest to his friends to take, an absolutely impersonal view of the proposal at the poll tomorrow. If carried out, he wished ths scheme to be a CTedit to the city, hut owing to hi.s anxiety for its success he would rather the proposal were not carried under the preset circumstances." The town clerk added that though Mr. Taylor was very weak, he "was qaite bright and clear headed when he gave this message.
