ENTERTAINMENTS

, ROVAL PICTURES. [ To-night the Royal Pictures and OrI ehestra will present tlie ninth change of t programme for the first time, which is said to contain an excellent variety of . subjects and many fine colored studies . The dramas are headed by "A Conspir- , acy in the Reign of Henry 111. of , trance" (.1578), which is a thrilling story L of conspiracy by the Due De Guise at the time of the massacre. Some 1 de- . Jightful scenic pictures will be f.otind' in [ Rottardam." ''A Glimpse <jf Pisa," the r most beautiful scenic part of Italy, and , 'The Cinematograph in Africa," a fine him of scenery and travel. Junflo life, intense and thrilling, comes before us in these pictures. In taking this picture the operator had to hide his camera in the tall grass, and, like a hunter on the watch, wait for his game. He had not long to wait, and his camera discovered a leopard ready to spring upon a graceful gazelle, and in a second a lasting record of that spring is made A pair of lion cubs on the threshold of their den, a tribe of monkeys, a herd of elephants roaming through the jungle and a group of vultures tearing to pieces the dead body of some'animal. Another picture full of real beauty is a mother ostrich and her young. The operator, tempted by the majesty of the great lakes, turned his camera towards them. A hippopotamus swimming in tho sun, and a group of graceful birds known as waders formed his bag, and with these pictures one of the finest films ever seen was completed. The balance of the programme comprises: "Through Storm and Stress," "Trailed by an Indian," The Inventor," "Max in Search of a Sweetheart," "Misadventures of a Bachelor,' "Jugged Cat," and "Wiffles' Sad Mistake." Messrs. Crust and Gjedsted announce that on Saturday next at the Sweets Matinee they will present "The Squatter and the Clown," a fine picture dealing with circus life, into which is mingled a pathetic little story in connection with the clown, his wife, and a squatter. THE WAY BENEFIT. There was a big crowd last night at the Theatre Royal, where Messrs. Crust & Gjedsted, proprietors of the Royal Pictures, tendered a benefit night for

the widow and family of the late Mr. James Way. Th» living picture programme submitted was of a high standard of excellence, and many of those present who were not regular picturegoers were surprised at the marvellous development of the cinematographic art. Messrs. Crust & (ijedsted, who offered to devote the gross taking''of the en- . tcrtainment to the fund, are deserving • of the thanks of the community for their ] generosity. The committee, however, / will not allow them to be at this expense. During the evening Mr. J. Paton, chairman of the Fire Board and treasurer of the fund, thanked the Royal Pictures people, and the lady tickets sellers for their invaluable assistance. One lady sold over £l2 worth of tickets. The Way Benefit Fund should benefit considerably as the result of the concert.

SAUXDEUS' PICTURES. Owing to Whiteley Hall having been booked for some time for the Dutch Fair, the pictures will not be showing again until the matinee on Saturday afternoon. To-night Mr. Saunders is showing the programme just finished in Hew Plymouth to Waita'ra picture patrons, in St. John's Hall. In future the Biograph Pictures will visit Waitara one night each week, using the new projector, and to enable every resident to attend the entertainment and also bring the family the prices have been fixed at Is and 6d. To-morrow night a complete change of programme will be screened in the same hall.
