SHORTAGE OF LABOR
THROTTLING INDUSTRY. By Cable. —Press Association. —Copyright Sydney, July 21. Before the Shortage of Labor Commission, evidence disclosed that the Lithgow Ironworks had recently refused a £50,000 contract owing to inability to secure hands. Other witnesses deposed that orders had gone to Germany and elsewhere from the same cause. THE WORKERS' PARTIALITY FOR GOVERNMENT JOBS. THE WAY OF THE UNIONISTS. Received 21, 9.20 p.m. Sydney, July 21. Before the Works Commission, the engineer for harbors and rivers stated that he had experienced no shortage either of skilled or unskilled labor. Workers liked Government jobs.
A hat manufacturer stated that he was paying £8 a week, and yet was unable to get men. If he imported men from England they would have to pay £2O to join the union.
