Before the Shortage of Labor Commission, evidence disclosed that the Lithgow Ironworks had recently refused a £50,000 contract owing to inability to secure hands. A hat manufacturer stated that he was paying £8 a week, and yet was unable to get men. If he imported men from England they would have to pay £2O to join the union.
