THE POULTRY SHOW

OPENING DAY. | A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. Excellent weather favored the opening of the Taranaki Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Society's) annual exhibition at the Drill Hall yesterday. The show is in every way excellent, the entries are exceptionally large, and the quality of a high standard. During the afternoon the official opening was performed by Mr. G. W. Browne, Deputy-Mayor, who, after apologising for the absence of His Worship the Mayor, congratulated the society on having established a record this year in the matter of exhibits, and upon the excellent quality of the birds competing. He referred to the value of the children's classes in educating the young people to a love of birds and animals, and opined that a more liberal encouragement of this section by the parents would very soon obviate the necessity for the existence of societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals. Mr. Browne hoped that the Poultry Society would co-operate with the Taranaki Agricultural Society in the movement for the erection of the hall for winter shows and exhibitions such as this. What else Mr. Browne might have said was drowned by the crowing of the Brown Leghorn roosters.

THE JUDGE'S CuMMENT. The judge, Mr. Palmer, had an exceptionally busy day. Conversing with our representative he said the game classes were good, the winner of the special being an Old English cock of good color and type, fit to hold his own in any show. Orpingtons were a very big class, the large gathering of Blacks being (hie to the championships being given to the society this year. The quality all through was excellent, and many of the; birds without cards would be no discredit in any show. The championship winner was a hen of beautiful type, excellent color, and shown in excellent condition. She was a very massive hen, and very hard to beat in any show in England. The winning cock and cockerel were another fine pair of birds that would be hard to beat in any show in New Zealand. Coming to the pullets, there was another very "warm"' class, not a duffer in the lot. ' The first, second and third birds were shown in excellent condition. The White Orpingtons were a small class, and the quality might have been improved. Tii Buffs there was a fair entry, but the quality here was not the same as in the Blacks, the birds failing in tvpe. Plymouth Roeks were again a Bmall class, and the quality was only fair. Wyandottes were numerous, but the quality here, too, was also disappointing, especially in silvers and goldens. The whites were decidedly the best of the bunch, with the exception of the Partridge Wyandotte cock which took special for the best Wyandotte in the show, being rather better in type and color. There was one Noudan, of moderate quality. There was a big entry in Leghorns, in both brown and white. With the exception of the white hen and pullet and the winning white cock, the whites were only fair. The winning cock was the best white cock that the judge had seen out this year, being splendid in type and comb, and well shown. The browns were a particularly strong lot, especially the winning cock, cockerel and pullet. These birds were of very good color, and were particularly well shown. Minorcas were not numerous, ' but were of very fair quality, the winning pullet being the only one, however, deserving of special mention. Andalusia ns were few, and the quality only fair. There was a fair entry of Hamburgs, but nothing stood out prominently. Bantams, especially vosecomb hen or pullet class, were a really nice lot, and were very well shown indeed. There was a fair entry of Pckin or Cochin bantams, and the quality was good, but nothing special. There was a fair entry I of ducks, and the quality all through was first-class, particularly in Indian Runners and Pekins. Turkeys were few, and the quality very fair. Altogether, the show of poultry compared very favorably with any of the shows held to date. There was a very large entry of pigeons, and the working homers were a feature of the show. The judge took infinite pains in his work, as the birds took a lot of separating, and he had to leave a lot of good birds out on account of their being shown in poor condition, for the success of the exhibitor greatly depends on the manner in which

the bird will handle and the condition in which it is shown. The judge remarked that the show had brought together the finest lot of homers that he had seen together at any show. To use his own words, "They wore a very hot lot." The prize for the best pigeon in the show was won by a blue eoek, of exceptional feather and type, and w : as shown in the best of condition. In the fa'ney pigeons there was a fairly good entry, and many birds of really firstclass quality were benched. The winner of the special was a black .muff tumbler, of splendid color and type, and was particularly well shown. Altogether the pigeons made a most attractive display, and the judging of them was really the work of one man, if awards are to be placed on the pons the same afternoon. OAME.
