There 5a at present on view In one of Mr. J. F. Hooker's sample rooms a splendid collection of paintings, principally pastels. The finest study in the whole art gathering is a very large oil painting, entitled, "Good Night, New Zealand." The artist wishes the Domm.on "good-night" when, by all the indications that a mariner notes, New Zealand is in for rather a stormy time. Xhe sea looks sullen and dark, the threateningly cloudy but gloriously tinted by the light of the departing sun. treat ocean billows lash themselves to foam against tlws rocky shore, and the storm petrels join in the prophecy of a storm during the hours of darkness. It is a splendid picture of sea and sky, and one that commands immediate and unwavering attention. Turning to still XT'"' , W « 5? d a beautifu l Pastel in Mr. Nigel D. Connell's finest style of "Dawson s Falls, Mount Egmont." Those familiar with these beautiful falls will know the peculiar hazy atmosphere which generally prevails there, softening the rough outlines of the rocks. This effect Mr Connell reproduces in his picture in almost startling realism.
