HOSPITAL CHARGES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, Last Night. The Hospital Board to-day decided to invite tenders for a new old men's home. It is estimated to cost between £3OOO and £4OOO. A lady member gave notice to move that the charge of 36s per week for children in the infectious diseases hospital be reduced, arguing that people kept their children at home because they could not afford to pay so much. HARD WEATHER. Timaru, Last Night. A combination of fog and 14 deg. of frost during the night coated the streets and paths witlh ice and proved dangerous. This morning many people slipped' and fell. One lady broke a leg and another sprained an ankle. Horses came down everywhere. At one corner half a dozen were down at once. Early tradesmen's carts had great difficulty in doing their rounds. PASSIVE RESISTERS. Christchureh, Last Night. Edwin Hannam and Harry Cooke (the last named the son of F. R. Cooke, who recently declined to pay the fine imposed on him for a breach of the city by-laws) to-day pleaded not guilty to charges of having failed to register under the Defence Act. At the Manawatu A. and P. Assocratioin meeting to-day, it was reported that the net receipts for the winter show were £104(1, and the expenditure £897, leaving a .profit of £143, or £l4O less than last year. The difference was attributed to the bud weather and the shops not closing on the afternoon of the Wangamui v. Te Aute College football match. Mr. J. M. Johnston has tabled a motion to secure a deputation from all A. and P. Associations of the Dominion to the Government to secure the allottmemt to the associations of a portion of the increased taxation on racing clubs, to be used by the associations for encouraging horse-breeding Lord 1 Islington has intimated to the Maiwwaitu A. andi P. Association that he will be present at the spring show, but wds'lites neither to make nor hear speeches. He ha& set himself against speeches at summer shows. Messrs. Ernest Short and Hugh Gillies were appointed delegates for the Mannwntu A. and P. Association to the Clydesdale conference at Dunedlin. Messrs. Harkness and McHardie lhave been appointed delegates to the New Zealand Producers' Conference at WeiMngtoaii.

SEQUEL TO MASTERTON TRAOEDY. Mas'terton, July 17. The little girl, Beryl Gardner, who was one of the victims of the tragedy at Mnsterton in February last, died last night, as the result of injuries received. It will be remembered that on the occasion referred to, the little girl and her brother were severely assaulted by tiheir mother, who then left the house and was subsequently found lying face downwards in .shallow water, having first presumably taken poison.
