THE MAN FOR EGYPT

COMMENTS ON LORD KITCHENER'S APPOINTMENT. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright London, July 17. Referring to Lord Kitchener, the Chronicle states that it is not enamored of the idea of appointing a soldier to a great position at the head of the civilian administration unless there are special circumstances in Egypt thoroughly justifying the choice. The Chronicle, however, eulogises the chivalry of Lord Kitchener's attitude towards Major Marchand's mission to Fashoda and also during the peace negotiations at Verceniging at the close of the Boer War. Such recollections should remove Liberal misgivings. The Chronicle adds that a man with a powerful personality is needed in Egypt at this juncture. Moreover, the Egyptians will find Lord Kitchener as just as he is fearless. Mr. Ramsay Mac Donald, in the House of Commons, asked for a day to discuss Lord Kitchener's appointment. Mr. Asquith postponed his reply.
