In an appeal at Boma, in the Congo State, against a conviction for murder and robbery, Major Arnold declared that whatever he had done was justified by circumstances. The country was in open revolt, and the natives frequently attacked him. Natives testified that a large batch of natives were suddenly sent to Noali prison, and when they lay down al night they were literally piled on one another. A terrible struggle ensued for I':" best places, and by the morning thirty-three were dead.
