BRITAIN AND JAPAN.

BRITISH PRESS APPRECIATIVE. By Gable.—Press Association.—Copyright. Received 18, 10.10 p.m. London, July 18. The newspapers note with satisfaction the Commonwealth's and other dominions' views regarding the renewal of the Japanese alliance, particularly the introduction of the new clause cabled relating to general arbitration, and also note France's gratification at the step to strengthen the hands of their British friends, and the Novoe Vremya's (Russian) applauding of the omission of the clause relating to countries adjacent to the Indian frontier and its further advocacy of a general arbitration treaty between Russia and Britain.

YELLOW PERIL SCARE. EFFECTUALLYDISPOSED OF. Sydney, July 18. Mr. Holman, Acting-Premier, considers that the Anglo-Japanese treaty effectually disposes of the yellow peril scare, which he personally regarded as without foundations. He trusts that venom-, ous journals will cease attempting to stir up international hostility. Melbourne, July 18. Mr. Hughes, Federal Acting-Premier, declared that the treaty was the most significant factory in the Empire defence problem. He hoped that the scope of arbitration treaties would be extended to cover other countries.
