I TARIKI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The fancy and poster dress skating carnival held in the hall on the 12th inst. attracted a big crowd, both of skaters and onlookers, the accommodation for the latter being taxed to the utmost. The carnival opened with a grand march, which was very creditably performed, especially considering that for the majority of the skaters it was their first essay at anything of the kind. A varied programme followed, during -Which the costumes were judged by Mr. -A. Pickering, whose decisions were greeted with applause in every instance. The [ "following were the prize-winners: Ladies' '"limey costume: Miss M. Eason, Five '"•(('clock tea; Miss Karalus, Ace of Hearts, faster: Miss Bell, State Fire Insurance. ®Qrackul skating, Miss E. Todd. Potato i-ace: Miss M. Todd. Comic costume: Miss L. Burket, Maori Wahine. Girls costume and skating: Miss E. Brown, "Lost, Parcel," and Miss Gwen Therkleson. Gents. —Fancy costume: Mr. J. Link-later, Highlander poster; Mr. J. Therkleson, Cooper's Seeds. Potato race,' Mr. J. Therkleson. Graceful skating: Mr. A. Chapman. Boys.—Costume and Skating: Ernest Eason, mountaineer. Amongst the other skaters in costume who deserve special mention were: Miss R. James, Japanese lady; Misses Matheson and Todd (2), Spanish dancers; Cissy Wasley, Huntress. Messrs Valentine and Ken Matheson were'ad-' • mirably got up as clowns and caused much amusement to the onlookers by their" clever tricks, skating and by-play. Messrs. W. Rudkin, Yates' seeds; James, jockey; W. Hine, poster dress; and J. Wasley, footballer. Quite the mo3t popular item of the evening was the splendid display of combined fancy skating by Mr. A. Pickering and Miss E. Todd, -which was a revelation to many present, and which the audience evidenced their appreciation of by rounds of applause. At the conclusion of a very ; successful evening the proprietors of the rink, Messrs. Judd Bros, and Stephenson, thanked the public for their sup- , port. Mr. J. B. Hine, M.P., is paying us a visit on the 17th, and he will give an address in the hall, which will doubtless be well filled for the occasion, as the cynical M.P. has many admirers in this locality. All classes of stock arc looking well, local farmers being supplied with plenty j of -winter feed, and given an early spring, i the prospects for the coming season are | looking bright, especially for cheese. .. Our popular factory manager, Mr. T. has received many congratulations on his success at the recent Hajjvern Winter Show, which reflects great credit on both him and the efficiency o! { the other members of the factory staff. I URENUI.

A football ma tcli was played here on Thursday between a native team from Bell Block and a local native. Urenui won, scoring 8 to Bell Block's 3. It was a vorv good game, and our native friends from Bell Block played well. Tlkorangi are coming here on Saturday to try their luck against Urenui. Mr. E. Butler has bought Mr. G. Gilliver's farm at Mimi. He takes it over at the end of the month, and is going in for milking. I am sorry to report, that we are losing one of our best settlers, in the person of Mr. K. Julian. Tie has always been to the fore in any sports, and will be much missed. The family are going to Warea, Mr. .Julian having purchased two sections there of Mr. Alexander's property. May they prosper is the earnest wish of all here. Mr. K. Julian represented the Urenui riding on the Clifton County Council.
