His Worship the Mayor was slightly improved in health on Saturday. A Sydney cablegram reports that Lord Dudley has left for Melbourne en route for England. Captain Edwin, formerly Government Meteorologist, died on Saturday morning, aged 71 years. Mr. Geo. Ilall, of Lepperton, who has been on a visit to Norfolk Island for the past three months, returned home last week.

. The temporary appointment of Lieut, Lampen as captain of the-11th Regiment (Taranaki Rifles) has been confirmed.

A London cable reports that Sir William Hall-Jones will retire from the New Zealand High Commissionership at. the end of August. A London cablegram reports the death of the Dowager-Duchess of Devonshire. who- collapsed owing to the excessive heat at the Sundown races.

St. Andrew's congregation has decided to extend a call to the Rev. Roseveare, of Oamaru, to fill the vacancy in the pastorate of the church caused by the resignation of the Rev. S. S. Osborne. Messrs. A. Hansen, of Elthain, and .Tas. Clarke, of New Plymouth, leave by this morning's express for Wellington to attend a special summoned meeting of the council of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union.

A London message states that Admiral Sir Charles Drury, Second Sen '.ord, and commander of the Third Division of the Home Fleet, stationed at The Nore, will be succeeded by Admiral Sir Richard Poore, late in command of the Australian 9quadron.
