MOTOR CAR ACCIDENT
IN THE MANAWATU GORGE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Woodville, Last Night.. A rather serious accident occurred in the Manawatu Gorge this afternoon. A motor-buggy went right over, and landed in the river. There was only the driver in the car, but unfortunately he was rather badly injured. The accident happened while the express to Napier was passing through the Gorge, and several on the train witnessed it. A telephone message was sent from the Gorge to Ashhurst and also to Woodville, but the Ashhurst contingent was first on the scene. The man in charge of the car was named Taylor, and was employed by Barraud and Abraham, of Palmerston. He was taking the car from Carterton to Palmerston. Those at the place early saw that something must have gone wrong with the steering gear, for no effort had been made to negotiate the sharp corner. The car went over a bank, a sheer drop of nearly 100 feet. Taylor managed to crawl on to the road, and when found he was in a dazed condition, having a severe wound on the forehead. The injured man was taken on to Palmerston. The car is now under water and tethered to the bank by a wire.
