KIA ORA JERSEY SALE

An event of great importance to Jersey breeders and dairymen of the Dominion is advertised to take place at' Waiwakaiho Yards, New Plymouth, on Wednesday, Nover,.!,./ 9, when Mr. Newton King will offer by public auction, on behalf of Mr. Charles Ciarke, his famous Kia Ora herd of Jersey cattle. At various times articles have been written on the excellent points of different henK but to expatiate on the excellence oi uiis herd is practically unnecessary, as Mr. Clarke s Jerseys are well known right throughout the Dominion, not only as comprising strains of the choicest blood imported from Jersey, but also for the success thai cattle from his herd have met with, in the show ring and for the benefit that has been derived from the introduction of 'Kia Ora" blood into other herds. For some years past Mr. Clarke has held an annual sale of his young catue, purchasers fer which have attended from aK paits of the Dominion. Mr. Clarke will auortly be leaving the district, and (ivith the exception of four lots) everything in the catalogue will be sold absolutely without reserve. Having decided to hold tins clearing sale, he has hao. to refuse many tempting offers for several of his young cattle, so that farmers and breeders will have the whole of the choice herd to choose from.

Commenting on the stock to be offered, these comprise 5 bull calves, 3 heifer calves, 7 yearling heifers, 2 yearling! bulls, 4 2-year heifers, 17 cows and 1 4-year bull ("Campanile's Sultan"). The heifer calves are all well grown, and are already showing fine points oi breeding, each one being eligible for entry in the Jersey Herd Book. A look at the yearling and 2-year-old heifers will be sufficient to men who know the various points of merit in Jerseys. These heifers have all been served, as they came on, by the imported bull, i "Campanile's Sultan," and this should prove an attraction to purchasers. Amongst the cows the milking points indicated by udders, escutcheon and milk veins, are very pronounced, and this is a strong refutation of the belief that the Jersey gives but a small quantity of milk which is rich in butter-fat. The cows in Mr. Clarke's herd have all large square shaped udders, and give an average of 40 lb. of milk per day througU the flush of the season, while they maintain their flow much longer than is common with other breeds. One cow, "Lady Disdain," calls for special mention as having an unique record in the show ring. As a yearling, 2-year-old and 3-year-old she was unbeaten, while her record to date comprises fifteen firsts and five championships. She is by "Dr. William" out of "Heather."' As to her milking capacity she gave on her first calf, as a 2-year-old, 35 lb. of milk on a 5.0 test, and last year, while in full milk, she was tested and gave 21 lb. of butter-fat in seven days. Mr. Tapp said of her, "She is the most typical Jersey cow in the Dominion."

However, it is in the bulls that most interest will be taken, and when they enter the sale ring, breeders will see that for size and beauty they will be hard to beat. The majority are fawn in color, though in some this shade deepens almost to black, but the whole of them are well grown, and should do much towards improving the dairy herds of the Dominion. The lot which will attract most attention is the bull "Campanile's Sultan." He was imported from the Island of Jersey as a yearling in 1007. and since his arrival his progeny have swept the show ring, as yearlings and 2-year-olds from Palmerston North to New' Plymouth. It is unnecessary to enlarge on his record and good points, but it is safe to say that when he confronts the public on November f) he will meet with the most spirited competition ever met with in the sale of cattle in the Dominion. Catalogues forwarded on application.
