A BRT3K YEAR IN SHIPBUILDING

A Home exchange says that all the talk there has been of hard times, it is a pleasant little surprise to discover that, measured by gross tons of output, shipbuilding in 1009 did better than was expected. During the eleven months to November 30. Clyde yards launched 333,905 tons, as compared with 319,139 tons in the whole of 1908. Wear yards hav e produced 115,407 tons, as compared with 92.023 tons. On the Tyne there is an increase, as compared with last year's eleven months' total, and probably also an increase as compared with the twelve months' total. In any case, the class of vessels is better, in the sense that the volume of business represented considerably more money. It has to be taken into account that there was n strike on the coast last year, and the Tvne and Wear figures for 1908 are. therefore, less than they would have been in ordinary circumstances.

A youth named Spinley. employed as a deck hand 011 the Northern Company's steamer Wakatere, liad an exciting experience on Tuesday, says the Auckland Herald. The Wakatere left Auckland •for the Thames about 1 p.m., and when she was ofT Tararu, Spinley overbalanred himself in ])laeing- the gangway into position readv for landing at Thames, and tumbled into the sea with the gangway. A lifebuoy was at onee thrown overboard, and fiie \Takaterc stopped. Spinley, however, had hung on to the ianoimr stage. and Captain Farquhar hail a boat launched, and rescued the youth, none the worse for his immor, sion. The gangway and lifebuoy were hauled on board the steamer nsain. and slip continued her voyage to Thames. ©VI'BSE A VESSELS DUE AT WELLINGTON.
