IXTEKXATIOXAL RACE O.N THE MAXAWATU. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmorston X., Last Night. The Manawatu Daily Times announces that Mr. H. Messina, of Foxton, to-day cabled to Mr. Coombes, of the Sydney Kcferee, withdrawing the stake deposited for a sculling match between- Whelch and Day on the Manawatu, as it was not covered in time. Mr. Messina, m conjunction with another Foxton sportsman, has decided instead to inaugurate an annual international sculling champioship on a long reach of the Manawatu river, 3'/ 2 miles above Foxton. He will put up £2OO in stakes, to which will be added 20 per cent, of the gate money. This gate money is not to exceed two shillings and sixpence per head of the public, and arrangements have been made with vehicle proprietors that the fare out to the scene of the race, to which there is a good road, .shall not exceed two shillings and sixpence. The course, which is to be visited by Arnst oi| the 19th inst., is straight, dead water, with level banks four feet high, permitting an uninterrupted view. The proposal is to hold the event in the.first week in December if the tide suits, the preliminary heats to be rowed on the Wednesday, and the semi-finals' and finals on Friday, other sports occupying Friday. It is understood that Dick Arnst, and probably his brother, Fogwell, Pearce, Whelch, Day, and, it is hoped. Webb, will be taking part. Foxton is easily accessible by rail and road from the Main Trunk and other lines at Palmerston, and the course proposed is probably one of the finest in the world.
