As no fire appliances were available four shops and a building used as a temporary post and telegraph office wvre burned down. The block was owned by Ji. Feasor. The occupiers were Slitherhud and Phillips ('butchers), 11. Eraser (auctioneer), .Mrs. Watts (storekeeper) and Parkes The building adjoining, temporarily occupied by the Bank of New Zealand, was considerably damaged. The insurances on the stock total £tHM, apart from which there may be 1260 on jewellery carried [ by Parkes as agent for Jones and Son, " r of Christchurch. The contents of the post office were saved. Incendiarism is suspected.

• SCHOOLMASTER FIXED. Auckland, Monday. At the Onchnnga .Magistrate's Court to-day Mr. Northeroft, S.M., gave judgment in the case in which .Mcintosh, lieadmaslvr of the public school at Oneliunga, was charged with assaulting a pupil by caning him. The Magistrate said he was of opinion that the punisjiracnt was excessive and not auministered for siillicicnt cause. Defendant had erred in not asking the boy why he was late before punishing hint for that offence. Defendant announced that he wished to appeal. He was lined £6 and costs £4 7s fid. RAID ON SIA'-CIROG SHOP. Taihnpe, Monday. On Saturday and Sunday evening* the police made raids on alleged sly-* grog shops at Utiku. A quantity of liuuer was found fa each case. OBITUARY. Palmcrston N., Monday. AlfMd Banks, of the Banks Meat Co., died yesterday from heart disease. His age was 57 years. He had been ill a long time.
