RAIIOTU. I (From Our Own Correspondent). 'lhe euchre party in aid of the hull funds was held 011 Wednesday evening. was a fair attendance. TIIO ladies' prize (a set of carvers) was won by'.Mrs. Cramer, and the gentlemen's ■prize (a set of brushes) by Mr. Bleakley. After supper a dance was held, excellent music being provided by Mosdames Leng and Orr. Mr. J. Eotlicry made a capable M.C. A rather unusual occurrence was witnessed 151 the township the other day, Two horses, owned by a Maori, attached to a dray loaded with timber, were, standing in the township when they took fright at a motor cyclist, and attempted to bolt. The harness, however, was not too strong, with the result that the horses practically jumped ou of it and left the. dray standing. The horses wuvc recaptured some little distance up the road. I MAKETAWA. ! (From Our Own Correspondent). Last Friday evening an enjoyable social was held in the Norfolk road schoolroom. The night was fine, and a fair number rolled lip. Excellent music was rendered by Miss L. Richards (piano), Mr. .1. Wilson (cornet), and Mr. ,T. Burgess (aeeordenn). During the evening songs were contributed by Mrs. Goodin, Misses. M. and E. Langley, Mr. G. Goodin (encored), Mr. F. Goodin, and Mr. B. Dombroski. Supper was handed routid liv some of the ladies of the district. Mr. <T. Burgess as usual efficiently performed the dutios of M.C. The work of dismantling the oil derrick 011 Mr. .T. Burgess' property lias been almost completed. The workmen there, T understand, have been paid off. Gradually the ulare increased, and soon-an apparently large building was seen to be burning fiercely, the light from which illuminated the great columns of smoke which were being sent up.
