Sub-Inspector Dwyer has received a telegram to the effect that Dennis Ryans' dwelling o;i Table Hill, Porangahau, was destroyed by fire at M o'clock this morning.

POSTAL ENQUIRY; SUGGESTED. Auckland, Last Night. At the meeting of the Trades and; Labor Council to-night a resolution was carried that the Government be requested to make inquiry into the eases in connection with the post office recently before the Supreme Court, and into the workiug conditions and Sunday hours of the Postal Department. MIDLAND RAILWAY CO. AFFAIRS. Wellington, Last Night. The matter of the Midland Railway Company came before Mr. Justice Cooper hi the Supremo Court to-day, upon the application of the plaintiff in the debenture-holders' action in England, who had fully investigated the accounts of the New Zealand receiver, Mr. J. 11. B. Coates, and being satisfied therewith, consented that Mr. Coates be granted a full discharge in respect of all matters already dealt with by ihim, and that the balance of the funds in his hands, after provision i?i made for known liabilities, be handed to the solicitors in New Zealand of fliq plaintiff, Mr. Coates to be under rid obligation to move further in respect of any outstanding matters save oa the request and at the expense of the plaintiff. Mr. Ostler appeared for the plaintiff and Mr. Dalzicll for Mr. Coates. An order was made by consent, in the terms of the application.

WANGANUI FREEZING WORKS. Wanganui, Last Night. The eighteenth annual meeting of the Wanganui Freezing Company was held to-day. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £5413, and a dividend of six per cent was declared. The chairman, in moving the adoption of the report, referred to the drop in the prices of wool, and said that New Zealand income from that product was only half as much as last year. The company has decided to Increase the capacity of the works, and a contract has been let for an addition to the ongmeroom. A new machine capable of freezing 2000 sheep per day has been ordered and will be ready for the coming season.

MANAWATU RAILWAY CO. Wellington, Last Night. At a meeting of the directors of the" Wellington and Manawatu Railway Co. to-day, it was decided to declare nn interim dividend of 5 per cent, for Uie half-year ending August 31st.

IMMIGRATION. Wellington, Wednesday. There are 532 third-class passengers on the Tfcmie due here from Lbnuon next Wednesday. Of these 307 (of whom 104 are children) are coming out under the assistance system. The number includes 05 farmers, 15 domestic servants, and 14 farm laborers. The assisted passengers are bringing capital totalling some thousands of pounds. One man has £BOO, another £765, and two have £OOO each. Many have sums ranging from £2OO to £IOO.

JUDGE SIM AND ARBITRATION. Timaru, Wednesday. The Timaru Waterside Workers' Union passed the following resolution: "This meeting considers the conduct of Justice Sim in the recent dispute of farm laborers not in accordance with tilie spirit of the Arbitration Act as it is understood by the mass of the workers in the Dominion, and suggests his immediate removal as President of the Arbitration Court."
