At the Police Court this afternoon John William Jlaekay., a resident of lirey Lynn, was charged with committing a breaoh of the Electoral Act in that lie signed his name as a witness: to the signature of William Albert;' Sims upon a claim for enrolment for, the electoral district of Grey Lysn without having seen such sucli signature written or without having heard tihe person signing it declare the sntd signature to be his own and signed in his own proper name. The defendant, who explained that ne was a ship's steward and had been engaged by a political body to canvass the electorate, stated that he acted in good faith and committed Hie breach unwittingly. His Worship said it was very necessary that the Act should be complied with, otherwise the rolls would be "stuffed." A substantial deterrent would have to he imposed, and ont which he hoped would be a lesson to! other people. A fine of £5 and 3C'fe'' costs was inflicted.
