Mr. Bruce Anderson received a wke last Tuesday to the effect that his brother James was dead. The' death will be regretted by all who knew deceased in the district. Mr. J. Iveedom has taken Mr. Anderson's position at the factory, which he will return to this week.

The Catholic social held in the Hemp- • ton Uali, Okato, on Tuesday evening ' was largely attended. The room w-js crowded with visitors from all along the coast. During the evening several songs were given. At midnight nn excellent sapper was landed round by the young men of Okato. Mr. P. Brophv made an able M.C. Miss M. Daley supplied the dance music. The Okato v. Warea cricket inat:h was played on Mr. M. Brophy's paddock on Saturday last, in fine weathur. The game ended in a win for the Okato eleven by six r»ns. After the match afternoon tea was provided by the Warea ladies. A return match will be played shortly. The ratepayers of this district do not seem to be very interested in liarb>r loan meeting-, in connection with the extension of the harbor. On Thursday about noon a gale sprang up from the south-east, with rain, and blew with terrific force all the afternoon and night. A farmer on the Warea road had a cow killed by a limb of a tree blowing down upon it on Thursday afternoon, and another farmer out in the oprn found one of his cows in the drain next morning, dead. The animal apparently had been trying to seek shelter through the night under a hedge and had fallen in.
