TARIKI HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

The annual show of the Tariki Horticultural Society on Thursday was not as successful as last year's, the seasui not having lieen propitious for the raising of fine floral exhibits. Another untoward factor was the proximity of th': Xormauby show. Wet weather militated against the attendance. Nevertheless, the show was a very creditable one, and the display gave some indication of the fertility of the soil in that locality. Tlus remark applies particularly to the vegetable section, the competition being keen and the exhibits of the highest standard. There was also a nice display ot flowers, both cut blooms and pot plants. Mr. T. Morton, of the Pahiatua nurseries, showed Jus magnificent fruit collection which had won the Itoyal Horticultural Society's gold medal at Normanby. The culinary art has evidently come very night perfection in the locality, for the show of bread, cakes, scones, etc., was very lin°. whilst the preserves, honey, pickles, and sauces was also excellent. The poultiy sections, of course, suffered from the fact tliat the birds have not yet got their new plumage, but still there was excellent quality in the pens. Mr. fi. "j'eed. of Xew Plymouth, won the points prize, with Mr. Bennett as runner-up. Mr. J. Therkleson, secretary, receive:! a well-merited special award for a collection of photographs.
