The Opunake "Rowling Club opened the season on Wednesday afternoon und-sr most auspicious conditions. The weather being perfect, there was a large attendance of bowlers, Manaia and Piliama being well represented, whilst bhere wa>* also a large number of ladie.-: present. Dr Morrison, the club's president, in a happy speech declared the green open for play, his little daughter throwing the first "jack," Several interesting games were pluycd, the four rinks being full, and as the green was in good ord°r some excellent play was shown. During the afternoon tea was provided by the ladies and greatly appreciated. Opnnake tradespeople observed Wednesday as a close holiday to celebrate the King's Birthday. The only excitement was the opening of the bowling green. The Tennis Club is to be formally opened on Wednesday next. Severn! players arc taking advantage of the ii-ie weather to get in sonic practice. The members of the Opunake school committee interviewed Messrs Ballantyne and W'hetter, school inspectors, with a view to having Opunake declared a District High School. The Inspectors promised to give the matter their support provided the necessary number of pupils were forthcoming. Messrs Uallantyne and Whelter .were at Opunake on Wednesday examining the public school and Convent sclj(|)l respectively. Mr Willis, Government Inspector of Factories was a visitor to Opunake on Departmental business on Wednesday. The s.s. Muritai arrived here on Monday with a fair cargo from Auckland. Mr Harding, postmaster, is at present away on his annual leave. Mr Coa:l, of the New Plymouth oJlice, is at present in charge. A movement is on foot to have a mail despatched to and from New Plymouth via Kltliam. At present the New Plymouth mail closes at 10 p.m. and reaches Now Plymouth at ten minutes |fcist one, the return mail leaving! New Plymouth the following day at 9.30 a.m. and arriving here at 4.1;! p.m. Via EHhnm it is possible for the mail closing here at 10 p.m. to reach New Plymouth next day at 10.4;") a.m., and a return mail can leave New Plymoiii.li about 12.30 a.m. and arrive in Opunake at 7.30 p.m. Local business could then obtain replies to urgent letters the same day, which would be a decide,! advantage.
