The Commission of Pardon, by three votes tu out 1 , advised the commutation of the death sentence to one of hard labor for life 5 the Minister signified lib agreement, and President Fallierea has made the order. A storm of indignation swept over Paris this evening when it became known that a man who had committed so terrible a crime was not to be executed. Until the last moment it was believed that President Fallieres would understand how strongly the public felt in the matter. Petitions from (frfl'eront classes of society—particularly from numbers of | mothers of the poorer class—continued » to he sent in to the President up to the last, begging him to have no mercy on Sob-illand; and now that it is certain that the man will nut be guillotined the entire neighborhood in which he and his little victim lived and several other of the poorer neighborhoods are in a regular ferment. Indignation meetings are being held at wine shops and cafes all over the city, and it is not impossible that a mass petition may be sent to the President begging him <0 reconsider his decision. Such a petition would not, however, be likely to have much cfTeet. An extra force of police lias been told oiT to patrol tiro quarter of the town in which the little victim lived, for it is there that feelings run at their highest. President Fallieres received Solelland's lawyer, M. Bernstein, this afternoon, and in a few days' time Soleiiland will be taken from prison before the Assize Courts, where he will be officially informed of the reduction of his sentence. M. Bernstein has unofficially informed Soleiliand this evening of the reprieve.
