SOCIALISM
To the Editor. Sib,—Your correspondent, " R.J.S," will be surprised to learn that there is a close and necessary connection between the social inequalities which lie deplores and the principles introduced by Luther which lie extols. .Nevertheless it is a historic fact that throughout the length and breadth of Europe in general and England in particular, pauperism in its present form was practically unknown prior to tlio introduction of the principles of Luther and associates. Before that era, poverty did not carry with it the badge o£ disgrace, and tlio poor claimed and received food, clothing, and other wants as a right Millionaires, monopolies, and trusts did not exist to grind and sweat away the lives of their less fortunate fellow-creatures. All right-minded, justice loving men must regret the un-Ohristian economic conditions which prevail at present, especially in England and America--the boasted homes of liberty—but many fail to trace these malignant growths to their proper sources.—l am, etc., Cosmopolitan.
