Su Joseph Ward opened the Otau' tau Post Office this afternoon. In the evening he was tendered a public reception by the citizens of Inveicargill in the Municipal Theatre. when he was presented with an nominated eulogistic address. C 'm> R.imentary references were made 0 the Premier by Messrs Hanan and Thomson, M.H.R.'s, Fddwick M.L.C., Scandrett (Mayor), and tho chairmen of the County Council and Bluff Harbour Board. In the course of his speech, Sir Joseph Ward said that since Ist April, £2,000,000 f Government debentures had fallen due, and the whole had been renewed on very satisfactory terms. There was £750,000 due on Saturday next, and thp greater portion had already been renewed. By Saturday it would" a.i bo renewed. Holders outside of New Zealand were paying a premium of 2 per cent for the right of renewal. Regarding the million loan authorised this year, ,£900,000 has been subscribed, and the other £IOO,OOO, which jthe Government cfoutt! got outside the colony if they .wishe!, was being taken up by "overcounter" sales at 4 per cent at gar, with currency of five years. The" total amount invoved was £3,750,000, of which /31650,00b had been arranged for without any publicity or fuss. As Colonial Treasurer, he felt particu* lariy happy, and the colony should be well satisfied. Sir Joseph Ward also said the colour line would have to be discussed at the Colonial Conference, in regard to the necessity of keeping tho colony clear of the "yellow peril."
