The following h'tteis received from place- beyond the colony are lying' e,'claimed at the New Plymouth post ollice -.—\V. D. Francis, C. \Y. Kevell. Ail invoieaigill business man has -ii view a wateh made one hundred years age, which >i(ll keeps good lime. The first Home shipment of cheese fiom factories of the Kaupokonui Co operative Dairy Factory Company, Ltd., which left Weiington on Thursday last, comprised 1970 cases. Thiw s the largest shipment ever mad'.; by ■>n:< dairy company in New Zealand, and i 333 cases more than the largest shipment made by Kaupokonui in the f.ush of the season last year.—"Star." Bus ness people in Wellington biteriy complain of the neglect of the iv.iiway officials 10 provide additional a haif accommodation, and the matt"r has become a public, scandal. It i- a frequent occurrence that goods u.nsh pped have to be left oil the '.vharf —there being' no room in the /hod —and exposed to the weather. Goods are also damaged by frequent handling's in the efforts to find them, and great inconvenienec and loss is <r :-: : oned.

The police received information on Tuesday morning that a five roomed Vuri' al Mokau was totally destroyed by hie during the night. The propel.y belongs to Jacob Johnson, and wa- unoccupied at the time. The owner was at the house on Monday a Iter noon, and also at about 5.30 that evening, but there were then no signs or fire. There was no insurance on e titer the house or tlio furniture, and the loss is climated at about £2OO. There is no clue a- to the origin. Mr A. K. Blundell, Stock In spoc--101 for the West Coast, which includes t ic district between Mokau and Feilding, contradicts a statement in the C anterbury Times that tile percentage i i lambs south of llawera will not reach a hundred, and denies the assertion that down towards Wanganui the cry has been that the percentage i- on the small side. Mr. Blundell says that many of the smaller flocks show a percentage of 150, while Iso is very common, and he estimates that the average for the whole coast wll exceed 100 per cent. Ho has never known lambs so strong and healthy, and there will be a larger percentage of fat lambs taken from i heir mothers than he has known before.

Chairmen of road and town boards should read, mark, learn and inwardly digest section 317 of "the" Counties Act, iXSO." Tilts provides for a penalty of /15 to be inflicted on the chairman of any such local body which does not forward by the end of June the returns and receipts and expenditure as to the 31st March 111 each year. Several of the road boards in the Taranaki county have been delinquent in this respect, and even at date the Oakura returns have not been sent in, despite frequent applications from the Treasury, through the County Council. The Secretary to the Treasury slates that the officers of delinquent boards should be reminded of their liability to the penalty mentioned above.

The magnificent prices being received for dairy produce, unparalleled 111 the history of the industry, should not (says tile Farmers' Advocate) be taken as a permanent rise in values. On the contrary, it is highly probable that before anoilier season arrives prices will recede to a mote normal basis. It therefore behoves dairymen generally to look well ahead and prov.de in this time of prosperity for the leaner years which must invariably come. We notice that several co-operative dairy companies have adopted the improvident policy of reluming to suppliers every available penny instead of providing for depreciation and an ample reserve fund, and we fear the example will have a very demoralising effect. Last September appears to have been a poor month for exports, compared with the same month of the previ< us year. The Agricultural Department's export leaflet gives the value of diffeient lines for September of 1906 and 1905 respectively as follows: IBuiior £6564 and £ls, 564; frozen mutton £66,713 and £86.5,53; lamb ,£12,206 and £23,190; wheat £1254 and £37,828; oats £2306 and £15.302. There were, however, advances in beef (£50,194 and £9,138) and hemp (£42,998 and £35, 132). It is also satisfactory to find that the returns for the six monthly period (April to September) show an increase in all lines except wheat and oats for 1906 over 1905.

The Wellington correspondent of ; the Wanganui Herald says referring ; to tho jettisoning- of the Land Bill Sir Joseph Ward said a few' words to me to-day which threw some fresh 1 light on the situation. He said that he had found afier a thorough examination of the position that a section of the House were for blocking business. Tl lc result he saw was that no Land Bill or any other business would have progressed until a date 1 long- after the Exhibition. It w-as nut the Exhibition that had determined the Government to lake the course they had unanimously adopted. ' They did noi, in the face of the representations by friendly members of the.r party who wshed to consult their constituents, see that it was necessary to enter into a struggle which would have made Parliament ridiculous in the eyes of the country. The total stoppage of business was too great a price to pay for the passage of a measure which could be got through but a few months later under quite different auspices. On Monday afternoon Mr H. Goodacre informed the gentlemen who formed tile deputation to exCouncillor Brnoking that the .past generations in New Plymouth had been gilted wiili more foresight than they were usually credited wita. For instance, they liad set aside several sect ons in the town centre as a site lor the erection of a town hall and lecture room. The ptesent Municipal Chambers smod upon portion of this land, but the Council had ob-

tailied legislation to alter the purpose of the remain.rig- sections, which were now revenue-producing. lie mentioned ihat the annual rental of the sections leekoiung 4<jfi at £2 10; and 93ft at £2, wuuld produce ,£350, inclusive of tlte site occupied by Mr J. F. Hooker's sample rooms. Mr Goodacre considered that as the Council had appropriated the site originally set aside for the improvement of the town, it was now their duty, by purchase or otherwise, to provide a ■■uitable location for the Carnegie iiblary, and he thought that in a.-k.ng the Ct/ncil to do so the people were but asking their rights. i'lie failure of the Waimate County l]:Ii to pass the House, and the passage 01 the Fliharn County Bill,'are evidently not too well received in Ha wera. The Star writes editorially : "We weie told some time ago tlnu tltere W'-re iricks in every trade, and 'hat Parliament was not altogether exempt fit,lll 'tricks.' A local tradesman says lie could see a whole host of overdue n'owns in the Theatre Royal circle on Monday li'glif. | Should he press for cash, lie says, the answer will be "awfully surry, but I lines are so lurd, you know." The Palmerston Show and the International Exhibition have now set folks ii-lravelling with a will. So great was the crowd of passengers for the south on Tuesday morning that 1111 extra train from iS'ew Plymouth, following fifteen minutes behind the usual 7.10 exnrcss had to be put on. There are about 150 signatures to the document, including the names of all the representative men in the district, irrespective of political distinctons. ilie following are among the accepted mail contracts in tile adjoining Wanganui postal district: hltham railway staiion, W.
