Evidence was called to show that accused spent the night of the ist October at the Georgetown Hotel, and that he was found in bed at Tomlin-son'-n at 6.30 a.m. on the 3rd October, (laving, lie said, arrived from Oainaru at one o'clock that morning. Thr accused's statement to Detective Fitzgerald when arrested did not ag-rue with these depositions. Among accused's effects was a large black handkerchief with two holeSj which the police suggest was used as a mask « hen Rennie's house was entered. Accused was committed for trial at the Supreme Court at Dunedin on 19th Novamber.
