PERSONAL.

Mrs A. Hill, of Manaia, died on Wednesday night. She had been an invalid for seven years. She leaves a family of seven sons (including Messrs Leonard Hill, Eltham ; A. C. Hill, Patea ; mid C. M. Hill, of the Waimale " Witness ") and three daughters, all of whom are grown up.

Mr Melon and family left Welling. lon on Thursday, by the Tutiuickai, for Wellington. Mr D. O'Brien went north by the ■Takapuna last night; to attend the Auckland llacing Club's meeting. Mrs O'Brien will be a passenger on Saturday evening for Auckland also, and they will probably return to New Plymouth about Wednesday or Thursday. Lieut. Hcfd, who will be favourably remembered here as conductor of the Wellington Garrison Band, passed through New Plymouth on Wednesday evening, on his way to Auckland, where he is to act as judge in the Charity Band Contest this week. He was met by Messrs D. McKinnon Bain,

Donovan, J. 11. Clayton, and a D.ur.v News' representative, who gathered from (he conversation that there will probably be no North Island Band Contest next year on account of the big fixture at the International Exhibition in Christchurch. He considers there is a big chance of having the next of

Ihe .Association contests held in New Plymouth, adding that there was hardly a more suitable I own, and certainly none that the bandsmen of the colony would like to re-visit more, for they hail very pleasant recollections of the treatment accorded them at the eontest here a few years ago. From the remarks let fall we should think Lieut. Herd would seriously support such a proposal.
