ALLEGED ASSAULT ON A GIRL.
A MAN ARKBBTKD. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 80. A young girl named Row Thomas, agiti 18 years*, residing at Avondate, was the victim of a seriou* assault last evening. She statu* that she was walking along Uw Main Road, about two hundred yards from the Avondale Hotel* when a man rushed on her from the durkucHs and seized her by the throat. lie then made improper suggestions, and ft is alleged Jie threatened to blow out iter braliu with a revolver .which he had in his jhund. He then, it i» alleged, dragged her e»mc yards off the load, threw her into a ditch, and attempted to commit a moat serious ofj fence. Some ladies passing disturbed him, and bo at ones ran off. I Information was given to Constable Grady, who is stationed at Avondale, and ho obtained from Miss Thomas a description of her assailant. Ho then arrested a ntan named .lohn Hughes, who was char--Bjxl at the City Police Court with the crime, and remanded till next Monday, on bail.
