WALL AND HUGHES' FOUNTAIN PEN.

The January numbir of "Patents" contains an interesting article on Messrs Wall and Hughes' fountain peD. It will bs remembered that Mr Wall left New Plymouth some time ago to put the patent on the maiket and to ptotecfc it in different countms. The pen, which is known' as " Walls Capillary Fountain Pen " is claimed to ba' the most satisfactory yet produced, one of the chief improvements in the pen is a plaited horse-hair feeder and a ] curved feed tube combined with a feed bar. Jn the employment of the horsehair feeder, the inventor has utilised certain natural law?, namely, air preseuie, capillary action and gravity. Bised upon these laws the action of the hair feeder must be always uniformly satisfactory. According to the des j cription the pen may be carried in any i position without escape of ink, the vibration of the nib in the act of writjing being requiied to complete the j flow. The effective control of the ink (enables the inventor to use an ordinary i mo.nl holder and any ordinary straight j nib, so thai the writer may moke his ■ own selection and substitute a new mo iat p ensure. The pen can be roanuI f ctured at a price which, when com- ! pared with the best fonutiin pens in the maiko*, leaves a considerable prnfi , even though sold at alt ss price. The succ- ss of a patent for an improvement is usually assured if the patented article be mora fffective or if it can be sold ut a cheaper price.
