The Daily News. TUESDAY, MARCH 25, 1902. THE POULTKY QUESTION.

On several occasions we have urgpd upon farmers and others the advisabkness of doing something to develop the poultry industry. We have pointed out the advantages New Plymouth pohsssses as the site for the establishment of a ccmpany to deal with poultry. With the freezing works aad shipping facilities so conveniently situated the prospects of a company here Bra very bright. In many other parts of the colony and on this coast the question is being taken up with great energy. Hawera and Ehham have both moved in the matter, and propose to work in conjunction with the newly-formed company at Patea. In Wellington the industry is assuming large dimensions. The Mew Zealand Times, referring to i the question, s*ys:—" The poultry industry in the Wellington district, just as in other parts of the colony, is assuming larger proportions every day. Just now the local grader (Mr W. 1 Blowers) and his staff *re exceptionally busy. Last night and on the previous night they were working till about midnight clearing the pens, the birds being sent off to the freezing chamber as soon as possible after they were received at the depot, in order that risk of deterioration might be avoided. The average number received at the depot and sent to the freezing chamber is 250 a day. Just now consignments arts coming forward from all parts of the district, as far north as Napier on the | one side and New Plymouth on the other. Not Only is the number of bird* sent for export increasing rapidly, but there has been a marked improvement, in quality, and the number of ' rejects ' is much smaller than was the case last, year." We do not know bow many birds ara being sent daily from New Plymouth ; but we do know that the interests of the producers would be much better served if the birds could be prepared and frozsn here instead of risking the journey to Wellington.
