This has cieated surprise, and the action is calculated to imperil Britain's negotiations at Shanghai. The consensus of opinion among leading Chinese merchants is that British trade is able to bear increased Customs duty ss an equivalent for the abolition of the likin, and the concession of other rer'ormn to ensure freedom of trade with the interior.
