THE PLOT AGAINST LORD ROBERTS. CARDNA FOUND GUILTY. CASUALTIES AT GOTBRAND HILLS. Received 23,1.30 pjn. Lohdoh, August 22. Gardna, who was court-martialled en a charge- of being concerned in the plot against Lord Roberts, has been found guilty on all charges. Sentence was deferred. A reconnaissance by Colonel W. H. Sitwell in the direction of Ventersburg, in the Gotarand Hills, resulted in 31 British casualties. Privates McLsod and Meredith, Qoeenslanders, died at Pretoria. CASUALTIES AT GHAULSNEK. ' RETREAT OF BOBRS. JMNBRAL HAMILTON'S ADVANOB. Received 24, 0.25 a.m. Lokbok, August 23. General lan Hamilton's casualties at Ghaolsnek on the 19th include : Lieut. Henry Bradburn and Luke Pekam, New Zealanden, killed. It is believed that the whole of the Boars intend retreating to Bush Yeldt, one of the northern districts of the Transvaal. - General lan Hamilton has creased the Crocodile River and is marehing in a north-easterly direction. . BOERS FIGHTING TENACIOUSLY, GORDONS AND LANCERS IN TIGHT PLACES. ;(Received 24, 0.20 a.m.) Lohdox, August 23, Generals Buller and French have advanced from Twfelaar a few miles north-west of Carolina to Vanwyoke'"Vlei, in the direction of Machadodorp. Much desultory fighting is going on, the Boers tenaciously defending a succession of rough ridges. A detachment of the Fifth Lancers were hardly pressed, but a battery was Bent to their support and compelled the Boers to retreat.
The Gordon Highlanders were temporarily in a tight corner, but regained their camp at night. General Oarrington engaged a Lichtenburg commando at Ottoshof.
