THE MAPOURIKA ASHORE AT MABEL ISLAND.

(PBB PBEBS ASSOCIATION.) Picton, August 23. The Mapourika, when entering the harbour about midnight from Nelson, ran on Mabel Island, a small island about a mile and a half from the wharf, She is still there. Her bow is well out of the water. An attempt to float her at high water failed. The Haupiri on her arrival from Nelson, will probably try and pull her off at high water. The lights were plainly seen from the wharf in coming round Waikawa Point. Picton, 8 p.m. TheWaihora and Haudiri are trying to tow the Mapourika off, unsuccessfully at present. The general opinion is that she is too hard on. The vessel is not damaged, so far as can be seen. She is high and dry past her rolling chocks at low water, in a snug position, and not exposed to bad weather. She lies on soft papa rock. If she is not got off to-night she will have to wait, till the spring tides, and possibly have to be lifted. Wellington, August 23. The Waihora left at half-past eleven this morning for Picton, taking salvage gear and a gang of men. An attempt will be made to haul the Mapourika oil Mabel Island on the top of high water at eight to-night. The Union Corapanys officials do not anticipate any difficulty in getting her off. So far, she is not making any water. Blenheim, August 23. The Mapourika missed the Picton wharflight and got on the wrong side of Mabel Island. . She ran ashore on a small reef. There is no danger, the shock being only slight.
