Disquieting rumours are current regarding the situation in Palestine. No letters have been received since Friday. AH permits to travel to Palestine havo been stopped
London, April 7
Late messages from Cairo indicate that a serious situation is developing in Palestine. Troops have been recalled to the western bank of the Suez Canal.
Moslem and Jewish riots commenced on Sunday and continued on Monday. Already there have been 188 casualties. The trouble arose through Moslems celebrating the feast of Nebimoussa while the Jews were celebrating the Passover. Rival processions met in the streets and brought the ill-feeling to_ a head. The Moslems resent the Zionist idea that the Jews should govern Palestine, though, they are a small minority. A Moslem procession from Hebron was approaching the Jaffa Gate of Jerusalem, when a cry was raised, "The Jews are attacking us." The Moslems dashed in at the gate, and attacked all the Jews in the vicinity. The Jews were prepared for. trouble, and they used knives and stones freely. There were many fights in the vicinity of the Jaffa Gate until British troops intervened and stopped the disorders.
